Editing & Mastering Hulked

By March and April 2024, the focus of the project shifted from gathering, writing and recording material towards editing, mixing and mastering recordings. Some of these were made on site at Lower Halstow, some recorded at the University of Kent’s studio facilities and others on location in schools and community centres.

Mixing and mastering this material was a big task, making use of the facilities of Apple’s Logic Pro X software suite. The finished recordings were then uploaded onto the Echoes app in order to create the sound walk itself. This involved positioning the ‘echoes’ in the appropriate place along the physical route around the foreshore and through the Old Brickfields at Lower Halstow. The position on each piece was another important creative choice, and involved taking into account the interaction between the content of the echo and its physical environment.
