Sailing by

‘Sailing By’, written by Ronald Binge, performaed by Anna Braithwaite and Jeremy Scott, edited by Anna Braithwaite.

Intangible and mysterious, familar yet obscure, the Shipping Forecast is broadcast four times a day on BBC Radio 4. For those at or about to put to sea, the Forecast may mean the diffference between live and death. For milllions of landlubbbing radio listeners it is the engimatic language of the Forecast that creates a landscape for the imagination; confirming romantic notions of Britain’s island status.
